The 55391 ZIP Code, on the northern shore of the popular recreational destination of Lake Minnetonka, has some of the priciest properties in the state.
Wayzata is a roughly 3-square-mile city on the northeast shore of Lake Minnetonka, one of Minnesota’s most popular recreational lakes. The 55391 ZIP Code of the city, which is 11 miles west of Minneapolis, has some of the state’s most expensive real estate. It is home to Cargill, the world’s largest privately held company, according to Forbes, with revenues of $114.7 billion in 2018. In the warmer months, Wayzata’s downtown is crowded with boaters who dock near the main Lake Street. In the winter, when temperatures dip below freezing, Wayzatans don’t miss a beat: They head outside to ice skate, ice-fish and even iceboat.
Notable stops and shops
Gavin Kaysen, former executive chef at Manhattan’s Café Boulud, is the owner of Bellecour—by day a bakery and by night a restaurant serving steak tartare, canard à l’orange and Atlantic cod.
Restaurateur Dean Vlahos’s Cov is one of the few downtown restaurants right on the lake. It has a cream-and-blue Nantucket vibe and a great summertime patio. Come for happy hour; stay for the crab cake, fish tacos and sunset.
Co-owners Christina Boyd and Keaton Frees offer a wide range of clothing: from high-end denim to cozy sweaters to flirty dresses. The boutique’s Mb Box program delivers weekly, monthly, or one-off wardrobe refreshes to customers in a 15-mile radius of the shop.
The yoga studio, co-owned by Michelle Henkel and Greta Walch, has a salt cave that gives clients guided meditations and so-called sound baths for calming.
Membership to have
The family-friendly Wayzata Country Club caters to the younger set, while Woodhill Country Club’s Donald Ross-designed golf course and 104-year history draws a sporting crowd with an appreciation for pedigree.
Event of the year
The Chilly Open, in its 35th year Feb. 8-9, has 1,700 tournament-goers use golf clubs and hockey sticks to hit tennis balls across three nine-hole courses on frozen Lake Minnetonka.
